To know the quality of drinking water in rural areas of Kasaragod

To know the quality of  drinking water in rural areas of Kasaragod

ABSTRACT
Water is a very precious resource.
We have done a systematic study over the purity of water of five areas of Kasaragod district of Kerala state to check whether the water is fit for drinking purpose.

The study involves collection of data based on the topic. A visit to the water authority Kasaragod. A survey in the five selected areas. We again went to the water authority to see the experiment, collected the reference of the test conducted. Compared the result and the survey. As per the result of the research we did, it is clear that the four out of five samples are unfit for drinking due to the presence of coliform and e-coli bacteria, due to low pH level and high turbidity level. The presence of these bacteria may be because the surroundings of the well or the water source may not be hygiene.
It could be because the sewage systems are nearby the well or the septic tanks do not maintain a minimum distance from the well or water source. It could also be because the wells are not properly covered or they may not be cleaned yearly.

Thus, it can be concluded that the Water from these areas are unfit for drinking.
INTRODUCTION

Drinking water, a very basic requirement for life and determinant of standard of living. People living in urban areas have access to safe drinking water but normally the rural water supply: private wells or public water system are always at risk. Beside government efforts the drinking water needs of the people are in adequate to meet the increase in coverage of households and safe drinking water supply.
Hence five villages in Kasaragod district of Kerala state have been taken as samples and detail survey was conducted, a questionnaire was conducted, sufficient data was collected. Some surveys shows that the water in these areas are unfit for drinking purpose due to the low pH. Most of the wells are open and there is a chance of the water mixing with the drainage. As the presence of      E-coli is detected. Drinking this water has also lead to several diseases.
 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To Prove that the drinking water in 5 rural areas of Kasaragod district are unfit for drinking.
Hypothesis
The drinking water in Vellikoth, Cherkala, Nileswar, Vidyanagar, Kanhangad of Kasaragod district are unfit for drinking.
Work plan

RESULT
1. CHERKALA: All the tested parameters are within the limit. Coliform bacteria is detected. The water is fit for drinking
2. Vidyanagar: As per the test result the pH is low and coliform bacteria is detected.
3. Vellikoth: As per the result pH is low. Coliform bacteria and e-coli are detected.
4.Nileswar: As per the result turbidity level is high, e-coli and coliform bacteria detected and pH level is low.
5. kanhangad: As per the result turbidity level is high, pH level is low, coliform and e-coli bacteria are detected.
Due to the presence of coliform bacteria and due to low pHand high turbidity level the water of four regions are unfit for drinking
Conclusion
Water is very important for living. Now day by day, its quality is decreasing it is either due to our own carelessness or due to the nature’s effect. As per the result of the research we did, it is clear that the four out of five samples are unfit for drinking due to the presence of coliform and e-coli bacteria due to low pH level and high turbidity level.

Thus, it can be concluded that the Water from these areas are unfit for drinking.

Solution
What people can do?

·      Decrease the presence of bacteria in well or water supply system are to keep the nearby surroundings hygiene.
·      Ensure that sewage systems are not flowing nearby.
·      Septic tanks to be maintained a minimum distance from the well.

Future plans
Ø Awareness programs to be conducted among the students in schools
Ø Awareness about this among people living in rural area.
Ø Informing about the water security of the concerned areas to the concerned authorities.
Ø Inform the local bodies of government to check whether the septic tank are following a minimum distance from the well
Ø      Inform the local bodies to check that the sewage systems are properly maintained
